The WIP (What If Podcast)

I once again got the itch to make “content”, and felt a podcast would be the best platform. I figured I’d put my recently completed (until the release more) Marvel “What If?” collection to use and decide to make the WIP, the What If Podcast! If you like discussion about decades-old comic books, take a listen!

Comics on eBay

Part of my New Year’s resolution was to ease up on my purchasing of comic books. I went full throttle on eBay and ComicCollectorLive.com to fill out my Marvel What If? collection, and I believe I’ve completed the entire set (numbered series and the one-shots; more on that when I have the final issue in hand). After going through that and some regrettable purchases from the quarter bin at my local comic book store, I’ve decided it’s time for some to go out before any more come in. With that in mind I’ve dug into my comic collection to put together a few odd lots worth mentioning:

Three issues of the 1967 Ghost Rider western series. This ain’t your regular Johnny Blaze, this is the “Phantom” Ghost Rider of the old west. The issues (4,5, and 7) have writing on the covers, but I feel a decent price for a lot of 3 to jump start a Silver Age 12-cent collection, or a Western collection.

Two issues of Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos. Before he was an Agent, Colonel, or Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., (or Samuel L. Jackson), Nick Fury led the Howling Commandos in WWII. These issues, 40 and 45, are in better condition than the Ghost Rider issues, as only one has writing on the cover and they are in generally good condition. Likewise, a good way to start a Silver Age collection.

The 1998 X-Men/Fantastic Four Annual signed by Paul Pelletier. In case you haven’t heard of Paul Pelletier, here are some of his credits. I got this signed way back when, probably late 98 or 99 at some show, probably in Portland, Maine. It’s remained in the bag ever since, save a couple readings, so this issue is in good condition.

A lot of 5 Amalgam Comics from the first 1996 wave. When Marvel battled DC in 1996, an event only doodled about before took place: Heroes and Villains were combined across universes to form Amalgam Comics. There’s Super-Soldier (Superman and Captain America), Spider-Boy (Sensational Spider-Man and Superboy), Speed Demon (Ghost Rider, Flash, and a dash of The Demon), JLX (some Justice Leaguers and some X-Men) and Bruce Wayne, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D (Bruce Wayne and Nick Fury). I love these things, with bold character designs, wacky stories, and the “meta-fiction” history alluded to in the captions and letter pages. Items are in good condition, considering they’re from the “modern age” of comics where all the paper is coated in a nice plastic sheen.

What If…Venom Possessed Iron Man? (Synopsis)

The following is a synopsis for a fan-fiction/short story idea I had based on one of my favorites, Marvel’s What If? Since I’m focused on writing my own stuff now, I figured I would write up the synopsis and present it with a small illustration. Without further ado, I ask you…

What If…Venom Possessed Iron Man?

A picture of Iron Man/Venom

Pursuant to a battle with Venom (reference Iron Man volume 1 #302), Tony Stark is possessed by the insidious alien symbiote after a particularly harsh blast weakens the grip the symbiote has on Eddie Brock’s body (Brock and the symbiote’s relationship had become strained as Eddie tried to ‘control’ the symbiote’s instincts).
Possession by the symbiote creeps up on Stark slowly, the physical stress of assimilation causing him to return to alcoholism. This renders Tony almost werewolf-like in possession, with the symbiote preying upon Stark’s weakened mental defenses when he’s drunk in order to cause him to go out “prowling” at night.
Eventually, when meeting with the West Coast Avengers, an argument over Tony’s alcoholism causes him to fly into a rage, unleashing the full power of the symbiote. Emboldened, it integrates with Tony’s Iron Man armor. The new hybrid, calling itself Rampage, goes on a tear, killing the US Agent and Mockingbird in his inital onslaught.
Heading across country, he KO’s the Hulk along the way, before murdering Spider-Man in NYC out of the symbiote’s instincts. In an ensuing battle with the Avengers, Hawkeye, fueled by rage over the death of Mockingbird, damamges Rampage with a barrage of sonic arrows. The durress causes the symbiote to split, producing a spawn which easily overtakes the emotional, unfocused marksman.
The new amalgam, calling itself Carnage, begins a 3 way war with Rampage and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. With other heroes joining the fracas, Iron Fist is killed when he tries to help.
Uatu, fearing Earth’s protectors, and consequently, the universe, are in too grave a peril, guides the Uni-Force to Earth, where it possesses Captain America. The enigmatic Captain Universe drives the symbiote from Carnage, and Tony Stark, in greater control with his symbiote weakened from spawning, cannot bear to live with his recent murderous ways and committs suicide.
Captain America/Universe, in his last act with the Uni-Power, flies the two symbiotes to space and casts them outward into the abyss, abating the threat…for now.

The Whiz watercolor (Amalgam Comics)

In the vein of my Human Lantern colored pencil sketch last time, I made a brief watercolor of The Whiz, another member of The All-Star Winner’s Squad from the DC/Marvel mash-up from June 1997, Super-Soldier Man of War #1. A likely combination of Golden Age speedsters The Whizzer and Golden Age Flash, The Whiz is, in my opinion, an exemplar of bold, simple, superhero design. Lot’s of red, yellow, and blue, I thought the watercolor would give a nice “speed” effect.
